Koi Prep is built for New York City families preparing for the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT). Protecting student and family privacy is foundational to how we design our diagnostic tests, adaptive practice, and parent reports.

- Zero Data Selling: We never sell, rent, or trade student or family personal information to third parties or data brokers.
- Zero Ad Pixels in Student Screens: We never load third-party advertising networks or behavioral ad trackers inside student diagnostic, practice, or exam screens.
- Full Access & Deletion Control: Parents can export or permanently delete their child’s account and practice history at any time.
1. Scope & Children’s Privacy (COPPA & NY Education Law § 2-d Principles)
Koi Prep provides online practice and diagnostic assessments for middle and high school students (typically Grades 7–9). Because many SHSAT test-takers are under the age of 13 or between ages 13 and 15, our platform is designed around parent-directed accounts in compliance with the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and aligned with New York State Education Law § 2-d student data protection principles.
When a student uses Koi Prep in a classroom or tutoring center, the school or tutoring program acts as the authorized educational institution and is responsible for obtaining any required parental consent for roster-based classroom accounts.
2. Information We Collect
Account & Parent Contact Information: When you register for a free trial, join our waitlist, or upgrade to a paid plan, we collect the parent/guardian email address, student first name or display name, grade level (Grade 8 or Grade 9), preferred language (English, Traditional Chinese, or Simplified Chinese), and encrypted password hash.
Diagnostic & Adaptive Practice Telemetry: As a student completes questions, we record selected answers, item difficulty tiers (Level 1 Foundation through Level 4 Advanced), real-time IRT/Rasch score estimates, hint usage, time spent per question, digital scratchpad work, and spaced-repetition mistake logs so we can generate the student’s Skill Map and daily study plan.
Billing Information: Paid subscriptions ($29/month Monthly Plan and $129 Season Pass) are processed through Stripe. Koi Prep never stores full credit card numbers or CVV codes on our servers.
3. How We Use Information
We use collected information strictly to deliver and improve the Koi Prep educational service:
• Calibrating real-time Computer-Adaptive Test (CAT) item selection and generating domain-by-domain ELA and Math Skill Maps.
• Sending weekly parent progress reports and requested product updates in your chosen language (English, 繁體中文, or 简体中文).
• Supporting classroom proctoring, score review, and mistake-log spaced repetition.
• Maintaining item quality using de-identified, aggregated response statistics (e.g., verifying that a Level 3 question performs at Level 3 difficulty).
5. Data Retention, Parent Access & Deletion Rights
Parents and guardians have the right to review the personal information collected about their child, request a copy of their diagnostic and practice records, withdraw consent, or request permanent deletion of their account.
To request an export or permanent deletion of your account and all associated student test submissions, email hello@koiprep.com from the parent email address on file. We complete verified deletion requests within 7 business days.
6. Data Security & Updates to This Policy
We protect account credentials using salted cryptographic password hashing (scrypt), TLS encryption in transit, and role-separated student and proctor workspaces. If we make material updates to this Privacy Policy, we will update the Effective Date above and notify registered parents by email.
